Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)
General Info

What is RepliGuard?

RepliGuard backups work basically like regular (tape) backups, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a device attached to the computer, RepliGuard works by sending your data encrypted over your existing high speed Internet connection to the RepliGuard data center. It does this at night, while the business is closed, or anytime when your system is not being heavily used. There are no tapes to change or programs to manually run, it's completely automatic.

What if we already have a local backup?

That's great, even with RepliGuard backing up your crucial data offsite, we still recommend you keep a local backup running for your "non critical" data. This can include system and program files as well as normal data that is not necessarily critical. Using both a local backup system and RepliGuard system better ensures the protection of your critical data.

How secure are online backups?

Unlike most local backups, all RepliGuard backups are encrypted with Military-grade encryption prior to being transferred offsite. This encryption uses a key that you create so only you have access to your data. Although the data is stored on RepliGuard servers, we cannot see nor access your data without your key. In the event that you would like us to restore you data for you, all RepliGuard employees involved sign a confidentially agreement prior to any data being restored.

What do I need to do to run the backups?

The only thing you need to do is leave your computer on at night. At the predetermined time, RepliGuard will automatically start the backup job. The software can even be configured to shut down your computer once it is done, to save on power.

How do I know the backups are running?

After each backup job, RepliGuard will automatically E-mail you a report letting you know the status of the backup, as well as quota usage. If there is any problem with the backup, RepliGuard will automatically notify you. Optionally, you can sign up to have a RepliGuard employee monitor your backups for you and inform you personally of any problems.

Technical Info

Which operating systems does RepliGuard support?

RepliGuard will work with most PCs, laptops or servers running Microsoft Windows versions 2000, 2003, XP, Vista and 2008 Server. To ensure a minimum of software compatibility issues, please verify that you have applied the most recent service packs (software patches) to your system prior to installing the RepliGuard software. RepliGuard can also backup mapped drives, allowing you to backup data on multiple computers with one account.

What is encryption?

Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that is used to scramble a data file. The only way to unscramble the file is with the proper encryption key. RepliGuard clients have their own personal encryption key that is known only to them.

What happens if I lose my encryption key?

To comply with HIPPA and other privacy laws, encryption keys cannot be recovered. RepliGuard recommends keeping a record of your encryption key offsite in a safe location.

What happens if my connection fails during a backup?

If a transmission is interrupted in the middle of a backup, the RepliGuard will attempt to re-establish a connection and resume the backup from where it was interrupted. If RepliGuard is unable to re-establish a connection, it will simply start over the next night.

What if I turn my computer off and miss a backup?

If you occasionally forget to leave your computer on, this is not a problem. RepliGuard will simply resume your backup schedule when you turn your computer back on. Files that have changed since your last backup will be identified and properly archived when it is time for the next scheduled backup.

Can I backup my network?

Yes. RepliGuard can backup mapped drives, allowing you to backup data on multiple computers with one account.

Can I backup more than one computer to my account?

Yes, you can use mapped drives to backup data on multiple computers. For more complex networks you can purchase several accounts to handle the backups on all your computers.

Does RepliGuard work if my company has a firewall?

RepliGuard establishes a "passive" network connection to the RepliGuard data center. It is therefore fully compatible with most popular firewall devices on the market today. This includes devices that employ network address translation (NAT).

How often is my computer backed up?

Most users run their backup every night, but you may choose to run your backup as often as you like, there is no limit on the number of backups you can run.

How long does a backup take?

The size of your backup, speed of your Internet connection and amount of compressed data being transmitted will determine the length of time for the backup. Backups can be incremental -- archiving only files that have changed since the previous backup -- or full, to backup all of your critical data. Most backups will require high speed internet to complete in an appropriate amount of time. Your initial backup and all full backups will take the longest because it requires transmission of all data files in your backup set to the offsite storage - not just the data that has recently changed.

Do I have to install a special Internet line or other communication equipment?

No. RepliGuard uses your existing high speed Internet connection to transmit files to our data center.

How do I restore my data?

RepliGuard lets you select individual files or folders for restoration. If you have a catastrophic loss, simply install the RepliGuard client software (or the restore agent) on your new computer, connect to the Internet and restore all of your data up to the point prior to the unfortunate event. In order to recover your data, you must have your encryption key or recovery diskette created at the time you first installed the original backup client software. If you have a large backup and wish to restore the entire backup set, you may want to consider a restore to disk option, which is available for an additional fee.

What can I backup?

Anything you like! RepliGuard can backup any and all file types. We do not limit or control what types of data are backed up. Please note that some files (I.E. Video files) are quite large and can take some time to backup.

Does RepliGuard backup Exchange, SQL, ect.
